Health & Wellness

The Health and Wellness seminar will introduce campers to health issues that are relevant throughout their lifetimes. The focus is on promoting knowledge of health-related topics and the ability to make personal choices that result in healthy behaviors as well as an increase in personal well-being. We will explore health holistically - including mental, social, spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness - as well as the interconnectedness of each of these aspects. Topics include stress reduction, the role of emotions, methods for coping with distress, empathy, kindness, gratitude, compassion, happiness, emotional resiliency, alcohol, drugs, sexual health, gender, sexuality, and healthy relationships. This course is interactive and will include workshops on wellness, positive psychology, health-related field trips, and guest speakers. Campers will learn to assess personal health and wellness habits, as well as lifestyle. They will create and evaluate goals set at the beginning of the course. Upon full completion of this course, Bentley students are eligible to receive credit on their transcripts. Students enrolled at other high schools should contact their respective school administrators to determine if this course would meet their credit criteria.

Senior Outdoor Adventure

In the Outdoor Adventures course, we will explore the plentiful mountains and landscapes of California. We will climb rocks, hike mountains, camp under the stars, and cook delicious meals. This course is open to beginners and experts; both groups will develop their skills. Our objectives are to develop self-reliance, skills in outdoor settings (including wilderness emergency response skills), knowledge of native flora and fauna, and conservation practices. Students will leave this course with a deeper knowledge of planning their own climbing and hiking trips — and, to toot our own horn, an epic level of stoke. This course involves physical activities and includes overnight camping with trained climbers and guides.

Trail Running

Trail running will provide students an opportunity to explore the fantastic regional parks in our area. We'll meet at Bentley each day before taking school vans to Joaquin Miller Recreation Area, Redwood Regional Park, Tilden Regional Park, Briones Regional Park (at multiple access points), Mt. Diablo, and our own Lafayette Reservoir. New runners are welcome. No experience is necessary. Campers should come prepared to walk three miles on the first day of class. They will build to running three to five miles continuously by the end of our time together. We will also explore the culture of competitive running with complementary readings that include John L. Parker's novel Once a Runner.

Yoga: Mind, Body, & Breath

In this course, students will tame their inner worriers and strengthen their inner warriors. Studies show that engaging in daily yoga and meditation practice can reduce stress, build compassion and connection, create a sense of calmness -- all with the added bonus of building muscle strength and flexibility. Join us as each day we engage in physical practice (asana), learning poses and their names, in a collaborative and non-competitive atmosphere. We will also play yoga games, engage in partner yoga, take nature hikes (and do yoga on the trail), and flex our creative muscles with both art and writing. We will stretch our minds and bodies in a supportive, empowering, and creativity-boosting class. All levels (from the novice to the expert) encouraged.
